About the Entrepreneur
Mark Unthank, was raised in Wilmington, DE. After graduating from Tatnall High School, Mark went on to attend Emory University in Atlanta, GA. While there, he gained a passion for the entertainment industry and earned a dual Bachelor’s Degree in Music and Economics. Immediately after Emory University, he attended the Art Institute Of Atlanta, and gained a dual Associate of Arts Degree in Audio Engineering and Music Marketing.
Armed with academic knowledge, Mark moved to New York City and worked for entertainment promotions company Butch Lewis Productions. There, he advanced to become its Director of Promotions and worked with James Brown, Michael Spinks, and MC Hammer. From there, Mark founded artist management and production company, Ars Nova Music where he produce and managed recording artists including Crystal Waters (Mercury Records), Blackgirl (RCA Records), Vanessa Evelyn (8 Ball Records) and Joya (Polydor Records). A few years later, looking for a change, Mark began consulting media companies including SJS/SFX Entertainment where he served as a Radio Syndication Producer and created album profile shows, Studio Vibes, Urban World Premiers, and Smooth Jazz Artist Profiles. There, he produced shows on Will Smith, Jenifer Lopez, and others. Additionally, he served as Artist Liaison for Consect, the first company to create Ringtone Charts in the early digital mobile era.
In the early 2000s, Mark founded the Funk, Blues and Rock record label, Exile Records USA. There, he negotiated national distribution as well as international licenses in the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada and Japan. Exile Records produced and distributed its products in partnership with advertisers including major record labels and mainstream beverage companies. The label also licensed music to television and film companies including Paramount, Disney, Viacom and CBS.
In 2008, Mark created CoolNerd Media, Inc, a digital media and AV technicians firm. There, Mark wears the title Chief CoolNerd and oversees AV technicians for business events and code development for its media kiosks and streaming platforms. CoolNerd Media works with event companies and government agencies including Live Nation Entertainment, Jones Lang LaSalle, NYC, NYS, and various public library systems across the United States.
